I thought I’d put up a page of resources I find useful, be they books, websites or podcasts. In no particular order, added to as and when I come across something/remember. Hopefully other people will find them helpful too.
Writer’s HQ – A treasure trove of helpful courses, all run in an entertaining and approachable style. Membership grants you access to their online community, which is really helpful for someone living in a remote location as I do.
Jericho Writers – Another treasure trove of courses and useful information! Jericho Writers has all sorts of great material which can help you along every step of your writing journey, whether you want to publish traditionally or self publish.
The Bestseller Experiment – A brilliant podcast which is not only entertaining but chock full of insight and useful information from bestselling authors and publishing professionals. Worth a listen if you’re interested in writing or the publishing process.
The Once and Future Podcast – A genre podcast with interviews with all sorts of great fantasy and science fiction authors and creators, really worth a listen to get some real insight into their working processes.
The Creative Penn – Not just a podcast but an incredibly helpful website full of useful resources if you’re interested in becoming an indie author.
Damn Fine Story: Mastering the Tools of a Powerful Narrative – A book on writing by Chuck Wendig, written in his entertaining (and sweary) style, it is a really approachable guide to mastering narrative. Worth a read.
On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft – One of the most popular books on writing, and for good reason. This book by Stephen King is an entertaining walk through his own writing technique. You may not agree with everything he says, but the man knows what he’s talking about!
Mountain Scouting: A Handbook for Officers and Soldiers on the Frontiers – A handy reference book for historical and fantasy writers, it provides a real insight into travelling by horseback, troop movements and supplies. It was recommended to me by another fantasy author and I’m glad it was.
Into the Woods: How Stories Work and Why We Tell Them – This book by John Yorke is one of the definitive works on the nature of story, do yourself a favour and read it.
Steering the Craft – A Twenty-First Century Guide to Sailing the Sea of Story – An incredible book on the craft of writing by Ursula K. Le Guin which will help you improve your writing right down to the sentence level. It’s worth taking the time to work your way through the exercises in the book, trust me.
This section is for resources other people have found helpful and sent my way, started because of LouAnne at Booklicious who emailed me to say she’d found this page useful when working on a NaNoWriMo project with young people at her local library. One of those young people, Evelyn, was a NaNo rebel and dedicated her month to poetry, finding a useful resource along the way. LouAnne shared this with me and I thought I’d share it with you. If you have a useful resource you’ve found or used for creative writing then let me know via my contact form and I’ll take a look.
Sit Down and Write – Poetry Resources – Some handy information and resources for those writing poetry.
